Emergency teams are continuing search and safety operations at the site of a wall collapse in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, to confirm whether anyone remains trapped beneath the rubble.
The incident occurred earlier on Monday after a minor explosion damaged a section of a student accommodation building. Authorities believe the blast was localised, affecting only the front portion of the structure.
Four people were injured in the incident, including at least one student. While emergency officials believe all occupants of the building have been accounted for, standard safety procedures require a full site clearance before the area can be declared safe.
Specialised emergency and rescue teams remain on scene, carefully removing debris and conducting structural assessments to prevent further damage or secondary collapses. The operation is focused on ensuring that no individuals are trapped beneath the rubble and that the building does not pose an ongoing risk to surrounding areas.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been confirmed. Fire safety investigators are examining whether a gas installation may have contributed to the blast and subsequent wall collapse. Authorities have indicated that further details will be released once investigations are completed.
