Planned Rand Water Maintenance To Disrupt Supply In Western Johannesburg

Water supply interruptions expected across parts of western Johannesburg next week are linked to Rand Water’s third phase of planned maintenance on its bulk supply system.

Johannesburg Water has confirmed that the 54 hour maintenance operation will begin at 04:00 on Tuesday, 6 January, and is scheduled to conclude at 08:00 on Thursday, 8 January.

During this period, isolation meters on several key bulk supply pipelines will be replaced. The work is expected to significantly reduce water availability in multiple reservoirs and areas that receive water through direct feeds.

As the maintenance progresses, water levels in affected systems are expected to decline gradually. This may result in low water pressure or complete outages in some suburbs. Areas that rely on direct feeds are likely to experience extended interruptions, although these systems typically recover first once pumping resumes.

Johannesburg Water has cautioned that the restoration of supply will not be immediate once the maintenance is completed. It may take between three and five days for all impacted reservoirs and systems to fully stabilise.

Infrastructure Affected By Maintenance

The maintenance will involve the replacement of isolation valves on the F45, F39, F28 and F15 pipelines. These pipelines supply water to several reservoirs, including Meadowlands, Fleurhof, Doornkop, Roodepoort Deep and Bramfischerville Reservoirs 1 and 2, as well as surrounding direct feed areas.

Areas Expected To Be Impacted

Supply interruptions are anticipated in the following areas and neighbouring suburbs:

Meadowlands Reservoir and Direct Feeds
Meadowlands including all zones and extensions, Tshepo Themba, Dube, Central Western Jabavu and Extension 1, Mofolo Central and North, Orlando West, Zondi and Mmesi Park.

Doornkop Reservoir and Direct Feeds

Bramfischerville Reservoirs 1 and 2 and Direct Feeds
Bramfischerville including all extensions, Mmesi Park, Durban Deep, Sol Plaatjies and Goudrand.

Roodepoort Deep
Hamberg, Rand Leases including all extensions, Discovery Extension 9, Georginia, Roodepoort and Creswell Park.

Fleurhof Reservoir
Lea Glen and Fleurhof including all extensions.

Advice To Residents

Johannesburg Water has indicated that alternative water supply arrangements will be provided in all affected areas. Residents are encouraged to prepare in advance by storing water responsibly before the maintenance begins.

Due to the interconnected nature of the water supply network, neighbouring areas not listed may also experience secondary impacts.

The utility has assured residents that updates will be shared regularly throughout the maintenance period via multiple communication platforms, including ward councillor channels.
