Cape Town, South Africa — Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former president Jacob Zuma, has resigned from South Africa’s Parliament following allegations that she helped recruit South Africans to fight for Russia in its war against Ukraine, according to a statement released by Parliament.
Zuma-Sambudla, who represented the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, submitted her resignation shortly after lawmakers approved the formation of an inquiry into the allegations. The investigation follows claims that she used her social-media platforms and political influence to encourage South Africans to enlist with Russian forces, actions that could violate South Africa’s Foreign Military Assistance Act.
She has denied the allegations, dismissing them as politically motivated attacks aimed at damaging her father’s political movement.
Parliament’s spokesperson confirmed that the inquiry will continue despite her resignation. Lawmakers say the probe is necessary to determine whether her actions undermined South Africa’s neutrality in the conflict and whether any laws were breached.
The accusations arrive at a sensitive time for South Africa, which has faced international scrutiny over its relationships with Russia and Western nations. The government has repeatedly insisted on a non-aligned position regarding the war in Ukraine.
No criminal charges have been announced, but authorities say they are assessing whether further legal steps are warranted.
