The DNC bus company has expressed its deep sorrow following the death of 42 passengers in a tragic crash near Makhado in Limpopo on Sunday.
The bus, which left Gqeberha on Saturday afternoon, was travelling to Harare on a journey of about 2 100 kilometres.
Passengers, mostly Zimbabwean and Malawian nationals, were on their way home when the vehicle veered off a mountainous section of the N1 and plunged down an embankment.
Authorities confirmed that 42 people lost their lives, while several others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The bus was carrying two drivers and a host at the time of the accident.
DNC Coaches manager Dennis Jakopo described the crash as a devastating blow for the company and the nation. He said representatives had travelled to the crash site on Monday to help with victim identification and to support affected families.
“We are doing everything we can to assist and reach out to the next of kin,” he said.
President Cyril Ramaphosa also extended his condolences to the governments and citizens of Zimbabwe and Malawi. He said the tragedy was especially painful as it occurred during Transport Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about road safety.
The president called on all road users and transport operators to act responsibly and with care, noting that South Africa’s roads connect the region and should be used safely and respectfully.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
