The Electoral Commission of South Africa has begun discussions with the Minister of Home Affairs to determine a date for the next local government elections.
While no official date has been set, the commission is preparing to be ready for the earliest possible date of 2 November 2026. It remains legally possible for the elections to take place in early 2027.
This week, the IEC met with civil society organisations and political parties in Cape Town as the Western Cape chapter makes preparations for the upcoming polls.
The commission’s CEO, Sy Mamabolo, noted that the national voters’ roll now exceeds 27 million, the highest number ever recorded.
He emphasised that while increasing voter registration is desirable, it is ultimately a matter for political parties, not the IEC, which must remain independent and impartial.
The commission is also in discussions with the National Treasury to assess whether funding will allow one or two voter registration drives ahead of the elections.
