President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that government is preparing to issue a request for proposals for the development of high speed rail corridors in South Africa.

Delivering the 2026 State of the Nation Address in Cape Town, Ramaphosa said the planned routes would connect Johannesburg to Musina, as well as eThekwini in Durban to Johannesburg. The initiative is aimed at ushering in a new phase of long distance rail travel in the country.

The announcement follows a request for information issued last year, which drew interest from nearly 30 companies keen to participate in the project.

The strong response signals growing private sector appetite to partner with government on major rail infrastructure developments.

While details around timelines and funding models are yet to be finalised, the proposed high speed corridors are expected to shorten travel times between key economic centres and strengthen regional connectivity.

If realised, the project could play a significant role in modernising South Africa’s transport network and supporting economic growth.
