The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has provisionally withdrawn fraud charges against former Johannesburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda and his co-accused, Mduduzi Zondo.
The two had been accused of defrauding Soweto residents through a funeral scheme between 2011 and 2012.
They appeared briefly in the Protea Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning, where the State announced its decision to drop the case.
Gwamanda expressed little surprise at the outcome, stating that the case lacked merit. He maintained that there was no evidence linking him to fraudulent activities and suggested that the charges were politically motivated.
