Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has expressed confusion over the idea of police delivering antiretroviral (ARV) medication to illegal miners.
Thousands of zama zamas remain underground in a Stilfontein mine shaft, refusing to surface and instead issuing demands to law enforcement, including a request for ARVs.
Commenting on the situation, Motsoaledi explained that ARVs require a prescription and cannot be obtained as easily as over-the-counter medications like Panado.
He emphasised that police cannot simply deliver prescription drugs based on a demand.
Many social media users echoed Motsoaledi’s sentiments, questioning why individuals engaging in illegal activities appear to hold such influence.
In a related development, Briefly News reported that North West police recently arrested over 140 illegal miners in Stilfontein, near Potchefstroom.
The operation led to the apprehension of numerous undocumented foreign nationals who had been recruited to work at the mine.
