eNCA News chief Kanthan Pillay has been dismissed with immediate effect from the television news channel. Earlier this week, Pillay tweeted calling former eNCA political reporter Samkele Maseko, a “rat: and the SABC a “sinking ship.

On Thursday, Pillay apologized and deleted the tweet, “I regret further and apologize unreservedly for The offense caused to all and specifically to Mr. Maseko, the SABC and the Management of eMedia,” Pillay outlined in a statement.
Maseko has since left the news channel.
Different organizations, including the South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) and Right2Know Campaign, have expressed concerns over media freedom in South Africa following Maseko’s allegations.
