Former sports, arts, and culture minister Zizi Kodwa and his co-accused Jehan Mackay will have to wait a little longer to commence their corruption trial.
The pair made their third appearance before the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crime Court, which was held in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
Kodwa and Mackay made their first appearance back in June after their arrest.
Mackay’s lawyer, Ian Small-Smith, told the court that the director of public prosecutions has not received Mackay’s requests for the allegations against him to be dropped.
In August, Mackay requested the withdrawal of the charges against him from the regional chief of the specialised commercial crime section. His attempts were unsuccessful.
On August 13, he then requested a ruling from the director of public prosecutions.
Small-Smith requested that the matter be postponed for a decision on his client’s claims.
The case was postponed for October 3.
Both Kodwa and Mackay are accused of engaging in corrupt activities including bribes totalling more than R1.6 million.
The state claims that while Kodwa was the ANC spokesperson, he was compensated for his interventions in government procurement processes to benefit Mackay, TSS, and EOH with payments and opulent lodging worth more than R1.6 million.
Kodwa and Mackay are currently out on a R30,000 bail.
