Newly released body camera footage shows golf star Tiger Woods speaking to police moments after a car crash in Florida, including a claim that he had just been on the phone with “the President.”
The video, shared by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, captures the immediate aftermath of the rollover crash that has since led Woods to step away from golf to seek treatment.
SOBRIETY TEST AND ARREST
In the footage, Woods is seen undergoing a sobriety test before being placed under arrest. Officers indicated that his faculties appeared impaired and that he may have been under the influence of an unknown substance.
Woods appeared surprised when informed of his arrest and was subsequently handcuffed at the scene. Authorities later discovered prescription pain medication in his possession.
DRIVER DISTRACTION AND MEDICATION
According to police reports, Woods told officers he had taken prescription medication earlier in the day and admitted to looking at his phone shortly before the crash occurred.
He explained that he had briefly glanced down at his phone when the collision happened.
LEGAL AND PROFESSIONAL IMPACT
Woods has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence and also faces a charge related to refusing a chemical test.
He has since announced that he will temporarily step away from professional golf to focus on his health and recovery, with plans to undergo treatment.
LINKS TO DONALD TRUMP
While Woods did not specify which president he referred to in the footage, it is widely believed he was speaking about Donald Trump, who has previously described Woods as a close friend.
Trump confirmed that he had spoken to the golfer following the incident.
Golf organisations, including the PGA, have expressed support for Woods as he focuses on his recovery.
