ORANGE FARM – Police officers assigned to voter registration stations in Orange Farm were pelted with stones and rocks by angry residents on Sunday.
Police fired rubber bullets after members of the informal settlement of Klapkop, determined at preventing voter registration, burned tyres and prevented others from continuing with registration.
Residents claimed they were protesting the lack of service delivery in the area.
They demanded that IEC officials leave as voting would yield no results.
Meanwhile, some members of the Denver community refused to register, citing their dissatisfaction with the new boundary demarcation.
The IEC station servicing Denver had been closed since Saturday.
Residents prevented voter registration as a response to the Demarcation Board’s decision to incorporate their ward into ward 118.
