CAPE TOWN – Violence in the Dunoon informal settlement in Cape Town continued on Monday night as residents embarked on protest action.
Western Cape police were monitoring the situation, with law enforcement agencies deployed in the area. Several roads around Dunoon remained closed on Tuesday morning and public transport was disrupted.Police say there have not been any injuries reported so far and no has been arrested for the violence Dunoon residents are demanding housing, after being evicted from private property off the N7 highway last month.Many residents have complained they can’t afford to pay rent to landlords.
Last week Dunoon residents marched to the Civic Centre, demanding responses to their housing concerns from Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille within seven days. Violence flared up on Sunday night, with Somali-owned shops in the area being looted, which resulted in the shopkeepers fleeing the following morning.
