JOHANNESBURG – The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) says it’s now working on an academic catch-up programme, following disruptions at the institution that have led to classes being suspended until next month.
Earlier this week, the university halted academic activities at its Soshanguve north and south campuses following violent clashes.
Students have been calling for the lifting of what they claim is financial and academic exclusion and the immediate insourcing of workers.
TUT’s Willa de Ruyter says this year’s June exams have been pushed to later in the year, so that students can have an opportunity to catch up during that period.
“Therefore we’ve decided to use the June and July recess period as part of the academic catch-up and exams will also be shifted forward.”
TUT says it has communicated the new plans to parents who will also attend a Town Hall meeting with management next Saturday.
The Soshanguve campuses will reopen on the 5 April.
The institution says it appears as if the recent disruptions at the university were prompted by what it calls a “third force”.
