The death toll from the shooting at Ntabankulu Primary School in the Eastern Cape has risen to three after a teacher who was receiving medical treatment succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
The South African Police Service confirmed that the educator died on Wednesday night while being transported by ambulance to Mthatha Hospital. Emergency personnel were forced to divert to Madzikane Hospital after she experienced medical complications, where she was declared dead by a doctor on duty.
The shooting occurred at approximately 12:00 when a former teacher at the school allegedly gained access to the premises by cutting through the perimeter fence. All three victims were female educators.
Police said the names of the deceased will be released once formal notifications to next of kin have been completed.
The suspected shooter, a male former teacher who was dismissed in 2023 following sexual assault charges, was out on bail at the time of the incident. He was declared dead at the scene.
Authorities have opened three counts of murder, while an inquest docket has also been registered. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
