Gauteng authorities have made a breakthrough in the battle against hijacked properties with the arrest of a man linked to the illegal occupation of a luxury mansion in Bryanston, Johannesburg.
The operation took place on Thursday when City of Johannesburg officials descended on a prominent residence along Grosvenor Road.
Once an upscale home, the property has since deteriorated into an overcrowded dwelling reportedly occupied by more than 70 families who are believed to be paying rent to an individual running an illicit building hijacking scheme.
During the raid, officers apprehended a suspect believed to be central to the operation. A firearm and live ammunition were also recovered, highlighting the seriousness of the criminal activities tied to the property.
Inspectors uncovered numerous unlawful water and electricity connections, which were immediately disconnected as part of efforts to curb the misuse of municipal services and restore legal compliance.
The City’s Public Safety department has described the arrest as an important step in intensifying the crackdown on property hijacking networks across Johannesburg.
Officials reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to rooting out illegal occupation and dismantling criminal groups profiting from vulnerable residents.
