More than R25 million has been spent on salaries for South African police officers who were placed on suspension between 2024 and 2025, despite many of them facing severe criminal allegations including corruption, robbery, rape and hijacking.
The figures were disclosed by Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia in a written response to a parliamentary question posed by Rise Mzansi’s National Assembly whip, Makashule Gana.
Cachalia expressed concern over the extent of misconduct within the South African Police Service, noting that the situation remains deeply troubling.
Gana has called for a comprehensive briefing from senior SAPS leadership and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, saying the issue highlights broader challenges within the policing environment.
According to his assessment, the financial burden is likely to increase further, as the current financial year has not yet closed.
He warned that the most concerning aspect is not only the cost to the state, but the gravity of the allegations faced by some of the suspended officers, crimes that undermine public confidence in law enforcement.
Despite the seriousness of the charges, many of the implicated officers continue to draw full salaries while their cases remain unresolved.
