JOHANNESBURG – A suspect has been shot and killed while the other was critically injured when a shootout ensued between police and suspected airport robbers.
Police had been informed of a vehicle that targeted individuals leaving OR Tambo International Airport.
The gang allegedly follows people from the airport and robs them of their possessions.
“Last night members of the SAPS National Investigation Unit were following up information in Isando regarding gunmen that are suspected of following people from OR Tambo International Airport and robbing them,” the SAPS said in a statement.
“While driving on Barbara Road the team spotted a BMW sedan fitting the description from the information they received. The driver of the vehicle ignored warnings to stop instead the occupants allegedly opened fire on the police resulting in a shootout and a high speed chase.”
In the midst of the car chase and gun battle, two suspects managed to escape while two others were apprehended by police.
“During the chase the suspects drove counter-flow through the streets while they continued shooting at police. One suspect jumped out of the moving vehicle and escaped.
“Shortly after, the suspect vehicle came to a standstill and the driver also escaped. Two suspects were found in the vehicle both having sustained gunshot wounds, one of whom was declared dead while the other was taken to hospital in a critical condition.”
The vehicle that the suspects were using had allegedly been hijacked. Three firearms were also recovered from the scene.
