OHIO — The father of Mackenzie Shirilla, the young woman at the center of the Netflix true crime documentary The Crash, will not return to his position as a teacher following a public outcry over his televised comments. Steve Shirilla, who taught art and digital media at Mary Queen of Peace School, was placed on administrative leave after the school cited a demonstration of poor judgment.
The controversy stems from Shirilla’s appearance in the documentary, which examines the July 2022 collision where his daughter intentionally drove her vehicle into a brick building at 100 miles per hour. The crash resulted in the deaths of her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and their friend, Davion Flanagan. During a segment of the film, Steve Shirilla appeared to minimize his daughter’s illegal drug use at the time of the incident, stating he did not have a problem with her smoking dope and suggesting it was the preferred drug to take.
School officials reacted swiftly to the broadcast, issuing a statement to parents confirming an investigation into allegations that a staff member had displayed conduct inconsistent with the institution’s standards. While the school’s initial correspondence did not name him directly, Shirilla confirmed to local news outlets that he was the subject of the disciplinary action. He has since stated that he has no intention of returning to the school, even if invited back, claiming the diocese showed its true colors in its handling of the matter.
The case has drawn significant public interest due to the calculated nature of the crimes committed by Mackenzie Shirilla, who was labeled hell on wheels by the presiding judge during her trial. Prosecutors argued successfully that the then 17 year old purposefully wrecked the car to kill her passengers. She is currently serving two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life for double murder.
The fallout for the Shirilla family highlights the reaching consequences of high profile true crime media coverage. Beyond the legal verdict, the public platform provided by Netflix has brought renewed scrutiny to the family environment and the parental attitudes surrounding the tragedy. Steve Shirilla maintains that his daughter is innocent and claims his current focus is solely on what he describes as the injustice she has faced.
