South Africa is engaged in efforts to reset its relationship with the United States amid diplomatic tensions following its disinvitation from the upcoming G7 meetings in France.
Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed that the decision to withdraw South Africa’s invitation was reportedly influenced by pressure from the US, including threats to boycott the summit. Despite this, South Africa’s bilateral ties with France remain unaffected.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has previously attended G7 meetings as a special guest on invitations from France, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom. South Africa’s invitation for the June 2026 French-hosted summit was formally retracted by French President Emmanuel Macron during the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg last November.
Magwenya emphasised that Pretoria remains committed to constructive dialogue with the US to resolve outstanding disputes, particularly regarding concerns Washington has raised over South Africa’s black economic empowerment policies and expropriation laws.
The US has also reportedly blocked South Africa from attending G20 meetings in the country this year, heightening the urgency for diplomatic engagement.
