Officers from the Oshoek Border Policing Unit apprehended two male suspects, aged 27 and 44, from the Kingdom of Eswatini on suspicion of trading in dagga worth more than R385 000.
The two were apprehended at 06:00 on Saturday at the Oshoek Port of Entry.
The arrest occurred when the pair attempted to smuggle dagga from the Kingdom of Eswatini into South Africa while driving past the border.
However, police officials were on high alert, and while examining the white Hino truck (with registration plates from the Kingdom of Eswatini), they discovered something terrible inside the handcrafted objects they were bringing.
When the members examined the hidden objects further, they uncovered dagga weighing roughly 91.80 kilograms, with an estimated street value of approximately R385 560.
A preliminary police inquiry found that the two were potentially on their way to Johannesburg, but their supposed mission was interrupted by the men and women in blue.
Investigators are working with officials from the Department of Home Affairs to determine the whereabouts of the two suspects in the country, and police investigations are ongoing.
The two guys are scheduled to appear in the Chief Albert Magistrates’ Court on Monday to face allegations of dagga smuggling.
