The mother of a nine-year-old girl who died in a car crash involving Sekhukhune United footballer Shaune Mogaila has spoken out, accusing the club of emotional abuse.
The tragic incident occurred in 2024 when Keo Mavimbela was driving her daughter and a 13-year-old neighbour to school.
Mogaila’s vehicle reportedly veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with Mavimbela’s car. According to police, the footballer fled the scene, and drugs and alcohol were later discovered in his vehicle.
Mogaila eventually surrendered to the authorities and appeared in court, where he was granted bail of R20,000.
Despite the severity of the case, he swiftly resumed playing for Sekhukhune United, participating in two matches and even earning the man of the match award.
The club claimed that the Mavimbela family had given Mogaila their blessing to return to football, an assertion that the child’s mother has strongly denied.
She expressed her shock and distress, stating that neither Mogaila nor anyone from the club had reached out to her family since the accident.
Mogaila remains out on bail and is scheduled to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on 19 May. He faces multiple charges, including culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, and fleeing the scene.
