Pretoria – The South African government has confirmed increases to several social grants administered by the South African Social Security Agency, bringing modest but important relief to millions of beneficiaries across the country.

The grant adjustments form part of the 2026 Budget measures aimed at cushioning vulnerable households against the rising cost of living. The increases affect the Old Age Grant, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, and other permanent social assistance categories.

According to National Treasury, the Old Age and Disability Grants will receive an incremental increase, while the Child Support Grant and Foster Care Grant will also see upward adjustments. The Social Relief of Distress grant remains under separate review.

Government officials say the increases are designed to balance fiscal sustainability with social protection, as social grants remain one of the largest expenditure items in the national budget. More than 18 million South Africans depend on some form of social assistance.

SASSA has urged beneficiaries to rely only on official communication channels and warned against misinformation circulating on social media regarding payment dates and additional “bonus” payouts.

The revised amounts are expected to reflect in upcoming payment cycles, with exact implementation dates communicated directly to recipients through official SASSA platforms.
