The ministry of Arts and Culture has launched the Africa month at Freedom Park in Pretoria Thursday night.
Arts and Culture deputy minister Maggie Sotyu kick-started the month long programme under the theme “the Year of Nelson Mandela: Building a Better Africa and Better World,” by urging South Africans to be more tolerant towards other people especially Africans from the continent.
Sotyu says South Africans needs to reflect on how they treat other people as the continent celebrate this special month.
The month was declared Africa month to celebrate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, now called African Union 55 years.
Sotyu says it is about time that both the government and the citizenry in particular adopt the biblical principle and golden rule that says “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!”
“Therefore it’s very important that the government as a whole, not only the department of Arts and Culture we need to go down to the people. We need then to have campaigns to engage the communities so that they should understand that this is our brothers. We do have some of our own citizens who are in other countries. You take Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland and Mozambique. We have got many South Africans who are living there and the way they are been treated there, they are treated with love and everything therefore it is very important for us South Africans to treat our sisters and brothers also in return with love.”
