President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed dissatisfaction with Minister Senzo Mchunu’s decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) without prior consultation.
In a written submission to the Ad Hoc Committee investigating police corruption, Ramaphosa directly addressed Mchunu’s controversial directive.
This account contradicts the Minister’s previous testimony that he had informed the President and received his support before acting.
Ramaphosa emphasised that during a meeting in February last year, he had explicitly conveyed his displeasure at not being consulted.
He also stressed that any further developments affecting investigations into political killings should be communicated to him.
The President clarified that the authority to disband the PKTT lies with National Commissioner Fannie Masemola, noting that the decision falls within her administrative powers rather than the Minister’s.
Ramaphosa acknowledged that the National Commissioner reportedly disagreed with Mchunu’s directive.
The Ad Hoc Committee, which is probing both the legality of the task team’s disbandment and wider police corruption issues, agreed that the President would not need to appear in person.
His written submission serves as the official record of his account, with Ramaphosa confirming he has provided all relevant information to assist the ongoing investigation.
