The South African Institute of Taxation has welcomed the appointment of Dr Ngobani Johnstone Makhubu as the new Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service.
Makhubu’s appointment was officially confirmed on Thursday, with his term set to begin on 1 May. He will succeed outgoing commissioner Edward Kieswetter and serve a five-year term.
INDUSTRY BODIES BACK APPOINTMENT
SAIT CEO Keith Engel described the appointment as a significant milestone for South Africa’s fiscal management and economic outlook, expressing confidence in Makhubu’s ability to lead the institution forward.
The institute also acknowledged Kieswetter’s tenure, noting the progress made in strengthening the tax authority and improving revenue collection.
EXPERIENCED LEADER AT THE HELM
Makhubu brings extensive experience to the role, having served as SARS Deputy Commissioner for Taxpayer Engagement and Operations since 2023. He has been part of the organisation’s leadership structures for several years, contributing to its strategic direction.
His background spans both the public and private sectors, with expertise in tax administration, finance and organisational management.
WIDESPREAD SUPPORT FROM SECTOR
The appointment has also been welcomed by other organisations, including the Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants of Southern Africa and the African Tax Administration Forum, which highlighted the importance of strong leadership in advancing tax governance across the continent.
PRESIDENT PRAISES LEADERSHIP TRANSITION
President Cyril Ramaphosa congratulated Makhubu, noting that the leadership transition reflects effective succession planning within the state.
He also commended Kieswetter for his role in rebuilding SARS and strengthening its position as a key pillar of fiscal stability and economic development.
The appointment signals continuity at the revenue service as it seeks to build on recent gains and enhance its capacity moving forward.
