The Road Accident Fund (RAF) has resumed settling hundreds of long-outstanding claims, beginning with those that have been pending for more than 180 days.
The fund estimates the value of these claims at over R20 billion and has already paid out more than R3 billion in the past two weeks. It plans to continue processing the backlog, with monthly payouts expected to exceed R4 billion.
The announcement comes shortly after the appointment of a new board and ahead of a parliamentary inquiry into allegations of financial mismanagement at the entity, scheduled to begin next month.
According to the RAF, the board has completed a review of claims older than six months and prioritised their settlement. Measures have also been introduced to ensure that supporting documents are reviewed promptly to prevent further delays.
The interim board, chaired by former National Treasury official Kenneth Brown, has committed to publishing bi-monthly reports to track progress. It has also noted the need for direct engagement on disputed or non-compliant claims.
Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa), which will lead the inquiry, has said complaints related to specific claims will not form part of its probe, as they fall outside the inquiry’s scope.
