Pretoria, Police have initiated a manhunt for a gang of around 30 suspects who allegedly bombed five ATMs at a shopping mall in Hammanskraal, Tshwane, over the weekend.
According to a police statement, the attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday. A security guard patrolling outside the mall was reportedly ambushed by the suspects, who arrived in a bakkie.
“The suspects disarmed the guard and proceeded inside the mall, where they robbed a second security officer of his cellphone. They then bombed five ATMs and forced entry into a store, where they also detonated a drop safe,” police reported.
As the gang attempted to flee, they encountered police officers and opened fire.
“A shootout ensued between the suspects, police, and private security officers. One security officer was shot and wounded and was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment,” police confirmed.
No arrests have been made, and authorities are still searching for the suspects.
“The exact amount of money stolen from the ATMs and the shop is yet to be determined,” police added.
