Johannesburg, Michael Lomas, who faces charges of fraud and corruption related to Eskom, has been granted bail of R2 million by the Johannesburg High Court.
Lomas appeared in court on Monday, where he faced charges related to a R745 million payment made by Eskom to Tubular Construction Project, a company involved in the construction of Kusile Power Station in Mpumalanga. The payment is alleged to have been linked to illegal gratuities paid to Eskom officials in exchange for lucrative contracts.
The British businessman, a former contractor for Eskom, was extradited from the United Kingdom in September 2024 to face 65 counts of corruption.
Henry Mamothame, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), confirmed that Lomas’ bail was granted under “stringent conditions.” These conditions include the surrender of his UK passport and South African Identity Document to the investigating officer. Lomas is also prohibited from applying for travel documents, must reside at a care home (details of which are to be provided to the investigating officer), and will be required to use a smartphone with location monitoring capabilities for monitoring by the investigating officer. Additionally, he is not allowed to leave the Gauteng jurisdiction without informing the investigating officer.
Lomas is among 11 co-accused in the case, including Eskom’s former senior manager for capital contracts, France Hlakudi; former Eskom group executive for group capital, Abram Masango; Tubular Construction Projects’ former CEO, Antonio Trindade; and businessman Maphoko Kgomoeswana.
The trial is set to begin in July 2026.
