Twenty people are now confirmed to have been arrested in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng for voting more than once.
16 people are from Dannhauser, two from Big Five Hlabisa, one from the Nkonyeni Municipality and another from Douglasdale in Gauteng.
Police say the suspects will appear at KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng courts respectively.
The suspects are alleged to have contravened Section 88 (d) of the Electoral Act 73/1998 whereby a person tries to cast more votes than a person is entitled to.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Vish Naidoo, says the arrests are proof that the check and balances the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is using to prevent the casting of more than one ballot are working.
He’s also urged South African to refrain from bragging on social media about having voted more than once – saying they could find themselves in hot water as the action is in violation of the Electoral Act, if not a fraud.
Authorities are asking parties who are celebrating the results that have started coming in to do so responsibly.
Naidoo says the Joint Operational and Intelligence Structures will continue to monitor all areas around the country to ensure that vote counting continues peacefully.
