Orlando Pirates chase fifth straight MTN8 title against Sundowns

DURBAN — Orlando Pirates will attempt to win a fifth consecutive MTN8 title when they face Mamelodi Sundowns at a sold-out Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening, with recent meetings suggesting another closely contested final.

Kick-off is at 18:00, and Pirates have confirmed that no tickets will be available at the stadium. The fixture gives Sundowns an opportunity to halt the Buccaneers’ dominance of the competition after Pirates eliminated them in last year’s semifinals.

The teams’ last five encounters have produced three draws and a victory apiece in regulation time. Each of those wins came by a single goal. Sundowns won their most recent meeting 2–1 in February, when Brayan Leon scored twice before Pirates pulled a goal back through Patrick Maswanganyi.

Pirates prevailed in their previous MTN8 confrontation despite both semifinal legs ending 1–1. Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine made two saves in the deciding penalty shootout, helping the Buccaneers progress to another final. That record offers little indication that either team will find Saturday’s contest comfortable.

Among the players attracting attention is Pirates striker Yanela Mbuthuma, whose contribution has earned praise from former Buccaneers forward Lehlohonolo Majoro. Speaking to IOL Sport, in comments reported by Africa Soccer, Majoro highlighted Mbuthuma’s work rate and ability to create space for teammates alongside his attacking returns.

Mbuthuma has contributed two goals and three assists in his past five appearances, including an assist on his Bafana Bafana debut against Guinea. Majoro believes a goal in the final would reward that form, while warning that forwards may have few opportunities to influence the result.

“This is a cup final, this is where being ruthless in front of goals plays a huge role,” Majoro said. He also identified Sundowns’ Leon, Iqraam Rayners and Cassius Mailula as threats at the other end.

For supporters attending, gates open at 14:00. Tickets must be downloaded to mobile phones before arrival; screenshots and printed copies will not be accepted. Every spectator, including children, needs a valid ticket.

Dedicated shuttle services will operate between Durban Station and Moses Mabhida Station from 13:00 to 18:00. Train services will also be available on the Umlazi, KwaMashu, Pinetown and South Coast routes. Supporters are urged to arrive early and allow time for entry checks.

The final will be broadcast live on SuperSport PSL and SABC 1, allowing fans without tickets to follow Pirates’ pursuit of another title and Sundowns’ attempt to end their winning sequence.
