The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Electricity and Energy Directorate has made notable progress in bringing electricity to the Gomora informal settlement in Kuyga, Ward 40, through its ongoing electrification programme.
Valued at R2.8 million, the project aims to supply power to more than 560 households living in informal and low-cost housing. The initiative is expected to improve access to essential municipal services, while also curbing the use of unsafe illegal connections.
Earlier this week, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Electricity and Energy, Ziyanda Mnqokoyi, conducted an oversight visit to monitor progress and ensure the project stays on track.
The electrification is being rolled out in two phases. The first involves reticulation work, such as installing poles, cables, transformers, and distribution boxes. The second focuses on household connections, which include fitting ready boards, service cables, and electricity meters.
So far, four of the six planned transformers have been installed, along with 200 ready boards, with further connections set to follow once electricity meters are in place. To accelerate delivery, two contractors have been deployed to the site to complete the remaining work.
Municipal officials have also engaged with the community to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal connections and to encourage residents to safeguard the electricity infrastructure.
Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe said the initiative is part of the municipality’s broader commitment to improving living conditions across informal settlements. She emphasised that electrification is not only about service delivery, but also about restoring dignity and ensuring that every household has access to safe and reliable power.
The project is expected to be completed before the end of the current financial year.
