Former Public Protector (PP) Busisiwe Mkhwebane has officially resigned from both the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and her role as a Member of Parliament (MP).
Mkhwebane, who joined the EFF in 2023 and served as a representative on the justice and constitutional development committee, announced her departure in a letter that has since circulated on social media.
In the letter, Mkhwebane expressed her gratitude to the EFF, describing how the party had provided her with support during a difficult time.
“In my time of need, you Fighters extended a helping hand, becoming a refuge for me over the past 12 months. Your unwavering support has been a beacon of hope, and for that, I am deeply grateful. Now, it is time for me to focus on spending cherished moments with my family,” she wrote.
Addressing EFF leader Julius Malema and the party’s leadership, Mkhwebane reflected on her past seven years, stating that they had made her realise the struggle for freedom seemed pointless.
Mkhwebane’s resignation follows a series of high-profile departures from the EFF, including that of Floyd Shivambu, the party’s founding deputy president, who is now a national organiser for the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party.
However, MK party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela has stated that there is no indication Mkhwebane intends to join their party.
