The co-owners of Manchester United, INEOS, have terminated Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassadorial role with the club.
It was unexpected that the Red Devils, currently sitting 14th in the league, would cut ties with their most successful manager.
Sir Alex, widely regarded as one of the greatest football managers in history, led Manchester United to numerous victories, including 13 Premier League titles, three Champions League wins, and a FIFA Club World Cup.
He also famously orchestrated a last-minute triumph over Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final, a moment forever etched in the club’s legacy.
Under his leadership, the team’s signature “Fergie-time” comebacks became legendary. The club has struggled to match its former success since his retirement in 2013.
INEOS, led by Sir Jim Radcliffe, has introduced cost-cutting measures as part of a larger plan to manage Manchester United’s significant debt and modernise Old Trafford.
The decision to terminate Ferguson’s ambassadorial contract, which was reportedly worth millions, is one of these strategies, with the club aiming to save around £45 million (approximately R1 billion).
Despite the end of his ambassadorial role, Ferguson will continue serving as a director on Manchester United’s board, helping to reduce financial strain.
