MBOMBELA — A high-stakes search and rescue operation in the Kruger National Park concluded with relief on Tuesday morning after a missing helicopter carrying four people was located. The aircraft, which had been missing since Monday, was spotted by search teams with all occupants found alive and unharmed.
The helicopter was conducting a routine operation on Monday morning, departing at approximately 09:00 to investigate an animal carcass discovered within the park. On board were a pilot, two South African Police Service (SAPS) investigators, and an Environmental Crime Investigator. Concerns were raised when the team failed to return as anticipated, and communication efforts were thwarted by poor signal and the low altitude at which the craft was flying.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed that the group was successfully located on 7 April 2026. The occupants had safely landed the aircraft in a remote area on Monday but became trapped by the dense vegetation of the park. Unable to navigate through the thick bush, the team was forced to spend the night in the wild before being spotted by a SANParks helicopter search team on Tuesday morning.
The search operation was an intensive overnight effort involving specialized technology. When initial contact failed on Monday evening, authorities deployed a helicopter equipped with night vision capabilities and a fleet of drones. While the rescue helicopter had to be withdrawn during the night due to deteriorating weather conditions, the drones continued to monitor the area until the group was sighted waving for assistance at first light.
Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, commended the team for their dedication, noting that the officials were carrying out essential duties on a public holiday when the incident occurred. The safe recovery of the SAPS and environmental investigators marks a significant success for the coordinated emergency response protocols within the national park.
The incident highlights the logistical challenges and physical risks faced by law enforcement and environmental teams operating in South Africa’s vast conservation areas. Investigations into the specific circumstances that led to the helicopter’s forced landing and the subsequent loss of communication are currently ongoing to prevent future occurrences.
