JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says he wants to meet with broadcasters about the amount of violent and sexually explicit scenes screened on television during prime time.
Lesufi says children are exposed to these types of behaviour, which encourages them to follow suit.
He says pupils are supposed to learn social skills by watching TV, but instead they’re exposed to violent behaviour and explicit scenes of a sexual nature.
“I am very worried. I said to my team, we need to find a way of meeting with broadcasters. We can’t have a country where learners are exposed to these high levels of cases.”
Last year, 434 pupils were expelled from public schools for ill-discipline.
Most cases involved children who had been taking drugs.
The department says it is also extremely concerned that the latest statistics show that more than 5,000 girls at public schools in the province fell pregnant last year.
