The Mazda CX-60 3.3D AWD Takumi is not exactly new to the South African market. First launched locally more than a year ago, the premium family SUV made a strong impression during early test drives. Now priced at R1 085 100, the question remains whether this six cylinder diesel SUV still justifies its seven digit price tag.

While more affordable petrol versions of the CX-60 are available, many enthusiasts argue that the diesel powered Takumi derivative is the model to choose. Part of its appeal lies in Mazda’s distinctive Kodo design philosophy, which gives the SUV a refined and premium appearance.

With sleek body lines and 20 inch alloy wheels, the CX-60 has a presence that could easily be mistaken for that of a European luxury brand. Yet it retains the reliability reputation associated with Mazda Motor Corporation.

Premium Design And Features

The Takumi trim adds several premium touches, including adaptive cruise control, a panoramic sunroof and machined 20 inch alloy wheels.

Step inside and the interior reflects Mazda’s typically minimalist Japanese design approach. The cabin is finished in dark leather and features high quality materials throughout. Instead of a touchscreen interface, many functions are controlled through a rotary dial system, giving the interior a more traditional feel compared to the increasingly tech heavy dashboards found in some rivals.

Fit and finish remain a highlight. The leather trimmed dashboard and solid construction contribute to a quiet and refined driving environment, with little to no cabin noise even on longer journeys.

Practicality has also been considered, with 477 litres of luggage capacity, expanding to 1 148 litres when the rear seats are folded down.

Six Cylinder Power

Where the CX-60 truly stands out is under the bonnet. The SUV is powered by a 3.3 litre inline six cylinder turbodiesel engine paired with a 48 volt mild hybrid system.

The powertrain produces 187 kW and 550 Nm, delivering strong acceleration and impressive overtaking ability. Mazda claims the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds, while its top speed is listed at 219 km/h.

The mild hybrid system helps improve efficiency by regenerating energy while driving and enabling features such as stop start functionality and coasting mode.

On the road, the CX-60 offers a balanced driving experience. Steering is direct, the ride remains composed, and the chassis provides stability even at higher speeds. Drive modes are kept simple with Sport, Normal and Off Road options.

The Verdict

The Mazda CX-60 3.3D AWD Takumi offers a combination of comfort, performance and understated luxury that many family SUV buyers will appreciate.

While it sits in the premium price bracket, the CX-60 delivers a driving experience that rivals several established luxury brands. For buyers looking for a capable and refined SUV without the typical luxury badge premium, it remains a compelling option.
