BEITBRIDGE — The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration conducted a high-level site inspection at the Beitbridge border post in Limpopo on Monday. This visit comes as the government prepares for large-scale repatriation operations of undocumented foreign nationals.

The committee, chaired by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi, assessed the operational readiness of the temporary processing centre. The delegation included Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Minister of Public Works Dean Macpherson, and Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber, among other senior officials.

According to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, this inspection is a critical component of government efforts to strengthen border management and enhance migration governance. The team meticulously reviewed the facilities to ensure the infrastructure can handle the logistical demands of the upcoming operations.

The Border Management Authority (BMA) recently confirmed that it has already facilitated the lawful and orderly repatriation of over 8,000 persons through this specific port of entry. Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato stated that the authority remains committed to maintaining order at the country’s busiest border crossing.

Minister Kubayi previously noted that the government is making substantial progress in these efforts. The current operations are part of a broader five-point comprehensive approach to migration management, which aims to ensure all processes are coordinated and constitutionally sound.

The intensification of these operations follows an announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this month regarding a clampdown on illegal immigration. The President acknowledged public concerns regarding the pressure on public services and the exploitation of the immigration system by criminal syndicates.

As the government ramps up its enforcement, President Ramaphosa has urged citizens to remain peaceful. Ahead of planned demonstrations, the President warned that violence, intimidation, and vigilantism would not be tolerated in a constitutional democracy.
