JOHANNESBURG – Public Protector Thuli Madonsela is living in fear for her life after she was tipped off of an alleged plot to have her assassinated.
According to a report in the Sunday Times, a prominent Cape Town gangster had planned to have Madonsela killed in a method that would have looked like a car accident.
The gangster’s plans have since been exposed by a whistleblower who is a police informant.
Madonsela, who is set to vacate her position later this year, told the paper that she suspected the motive behind the alleged hit was revenge.
“I’m shocked,” Madonsela told the weekly.
“I don’t know where this is coming from. I’m leaving office in five months’ time. It’s probably revenge.”
“I take the threat seriously because I have received credible information from the same whistleblower before. On three occasions he gave me information that turned out to be true.
“I’m traumatised. I don’t know who was behind the alleged plot and what their motives are.”
Madonsela told the paper that the gangster was paid R470,000 to orchestrate the hit which would have been carried out by hitmen.
The incident has caused her to alter her movements which have included halting jogging in the morning and taking extra precautionary measures.
