A Gauteng police sergeant has told the Madlanga Commission that a “human error” led to the omission of a key detail linking Deputy President Paul Mashatile to controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
Sergeant Fannie Nkosi made the admission while testifying about a handwritten statement he compiled following a police raid at his home in October last year. Officers had been searching for a credit card belonging to Matlala.
In that statement, Nkosi indicated that Matlala had contacted him requesting the return of the card, allegedly stating that he needed it urgently ahead of a meeting with Mashatile and Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.
Reading from the statement at the commission, Nkosi said Matlala told him he required the card as he was preparing to meet the deputy president.
However, Nkosi acknowledged that this detail was not included in the version of events he initially submitted to the commission, nor in his earlier oral testimony. When questioned about the omission, he attributed it to a mistake.
“It was a human error,” Nkosi said, maintaining that his account reflects what he claims to have heard from Matlala at the time.
He denied any intention to shield Mashatile, stating that he had no knowledge of what the alleged meeting entailed or whether it ever took place.
Nkosi has previously faced scrutiny at the commission over his possession of Matlala’s credit card, as well as allegations related to the handling of sensitive information. His testimony forms part of ongoing proceedings examining links between law enforcement officials and alleged criminal networks.
