The M23 rebel group has announced a ceasefire, effective immediately, after months of violent clashes in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Tutsi-led group has been engaged in intense fighting that has resulted in the deaths of over 700 people, including 14 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers.
In addition to declaring a ceasefire, the M23 has called for the withdrawal of peacekeeping forces from the region. The announcement comes just days ahead of a scheduled meeting between leaders from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and East Africa to discuss the security situation in the DRC.
