Ohrigstad, Limpopo — A 28-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of well-known Limpopo farmer Attie Mahne, 77, who was killed during a violent attack on his farm outside Ohrigstad. His wife, who was assaulted during the same incident, survived and is receiving medical care.
According to Limpopo police, officers traced and apprehended the man in the early hours of Monday morning following intensive investigations that began immediately after the attack. Mahne was found dead in his farmhouse on Sunday, while his injured wife managed to alert neighbours who contacted authorities.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the swift arrest followed strong community cooperation and rapid forensic work at the crime scene. Mashaba confirmed that the suspect is facing charges of murder, attempted murder, house robbery, and possession of suspected stolen property. Additional charges may be added as the investigation continues.
Mahne, a respected farmer in the Ohrigstad area, was widely known in local agricultural circles, and his killing has sparked renewed concerns from farming organisations about rural safety and vulnerability to violent crime. Lobby groups have called for strengthened policing resources in isolated farming regions.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court this week.
