Water supply to several parts of Johannesburg remains under pressure after the old Brixton reservoir dropped to critically low levels over the weekend.
Johannesburg Water has since implemented operational adjustments in an effort to stabilise supply between the old and the new Brixton reservoirs. The newer reservoir has been brought online to assist the older facility, which has struggled to keep up with rising water demand.
The Brixton reservoir system supplies water to several western and central Johannesburg suburbs, including Auckland Park, Mayfair, Coronationville and surrounding areas.
After water levels at the old Brixton reservoir fell to critical levels, Johannesburg Water temporarily stopped the outflow of water to households to allow the reservoir to recover and refill. Supply to consumers will resume once water levels improve sufficiently, after which pumping operations to the reservoir will also restart.
To help restore the system, Johannesburg Water has also reduced water supply to areas connected to the Hursthill network. As a result, residents in communities such as Northcliff, Claremont and nearby suburbs may experience temporary water disruptions.
Johannesburg Water said its teams are monitoring reservoir levels closely and remain hopeful that the system will stabilise soon.
