ROME – Renowned Malian singer Rokia Traore, known for her music and as a UNHCR goodwill ambassador, was arrested in Italy due to an international child custody dispute and faces extradition to Belgium where she was sentenced to two years in prison last October.
Traore’s lawyer is appealing to EU judges to resist the extradition request, citing concerns about the fairness of the trial in Belgium where she was sentenced in absentia without proper legal representation.
The lawyer has requested the EU court to intervene as it has jurisdiction over EU-wide arrest warrants. Traore has been in jail near Rome since her arrest at the airport while on her way to hold a concert.
The article discusses the case of singer Rokia Traore, who was initially arrested in France in 2020 due to a Belgian arrest warrant for not complying with a court order regarding her daughter.
After being conditionally released, she traveled to Mali against orders not to leave France until her extradition case was resolved. Traore’s daughter, aged 9, currently resides in Mali.
A prosecutor at Rome’s appeal court has indicated that Traore could transition from prison to house arrest in Rome if she secures a residence there.
