Pretoria — South African Social Security Agency has urged social grant beneficiaries not to ignore SMS notifications relating to ongoing social grant reviews, warning that failure to respond could affect continued access to payments.
SASSA said the SMS messages are part of routine verification processes aimed at ensuring that grants are paid to qualifying recipients in line with legislative requirements. Beneficiaries who receive review notifications are required to present themselves at designated offices with relevant supporting documentation.
The agency emphasised that the review process is not a cancellation of grants but a compliance measure designed to confirm that beneficiaries still meet eligibility criteria. Reviews may include checks on income status, personal details or other qualifying conditions.
SASSA cautioned beneficiaries against ignoring official SMS alerts, noting that non-compliance within the stipulated timeframe could result in temporary suspension of grants until the review process is completed.
The agency also reminded recipients to be vigilant against scams and to verify that SMS notifications originate from official SASSA channels. Beneficiaries are encouraged to contact their nearest SASSA office or use verified communication platforms if they are uncertain about the authenticity of a message.
SASSA said the review initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen governance, protect public funds and ensure that social assistance reaches the intended recipients.
