Pretoria — Cyril Ramaphosa has paid tribute to Jesse Jackson Sr, describing the veteran civil rights activist as a towering figure whose lifelong struggle for equality and justice resonated far beyond the borders of the United States.

In a statement, President Ramaphosa expressed condolences to Jackson’s family, friends and supporters, acknowledging his enduring contribution to the global fight against racial injustice, inequality and discrimination. The President said Jackson’s activism strengthened international solidarity movements, including support for South Africa’s liberation struggle during apartheid.

Jackson, a prominent American civil rights leader and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, was widely recognised for advancing voting rights, economic empowerment and social justice. Over several decades, he became a vocal advocate for human rights causes across the world.

President Ramaphosa noted that Jackson’s commitment to justice and human dignity aligned closely with South Africa’s own democratic values. He described the late reverend as a bridge-builder who worked tirelessly to promote dialogue, equality and opportunity for marginalised communities.

The Presidency said Jackson’s legacy would continue to inspire activists, leaders and citizens committed to advancing inclusive societies and defending fundamental freedoms.
