Pretoria – President Jacob Zuma is expected to visit uMhlabuyalingana Local Municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday, as part of government’s intensified campaign against crime.
In a statement on Monday, the Presidency said crime in border-lying uMhlabuyalingana causes heightened tensions between residents and migrants from neighbouring countries.
The President has received complaints from residents living in the municipalities, which border Swaziland and Mozambique, about high and intolerable levels of cross-border crime of stock theft and car hijackings.
During the visit, President Zuma will inspect the border, speak to the local police as well as engage with the communities of uMkhanyakude, Hlabisa and Jozini Municipalities.
The President has also recently visited the communities of Nyanga township in Cape Town and Soshanguve in Pretoria, as part of the fight against crime.
The Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation has been directed to monitor progress in the fight against crime in the areas visited by the President.
President Zuma will be accompanied by the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Willies Mchunu, Ministers, MECs and mayors, and all spheres united in eradicating crime and dealing with serious tensions in the area between citizens and migrants or visitors from neighbouring sister countries.
