Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina highlighted the crucial role of eThekwini Metro, iLembe, and KwaDakuza Municipalities in ensuring effective water distribution to households following the commissioning of the Hazelmere Dam, the world’s highest piano key weir dam, located in KwaZulu-Natal’s Mdloti River.
The dam’s wall was raised by seven meters to enhance its storage capacity and meet the growing water demands of the rapidly expanding North Coast population, particularly in areas like Verulam, Groutville, Blythedale, and Ballito.
Majodina emphasized the municipalities’ responsibility in directing water to households, as the upgraded dam now meets world-class standards due to advanced technology and innovative construction methods, including the installation of large anchors and real-time monitoring systems.
The project aims to alleviate water challenges in the region and support the increasing demand for potable water driven by housing growth.
The department stated that the enhancement of the wall contributed to the generation of employment opportunities for 187 local individuals, comprising 16 women and 53 youth.
“The total number of small, micro, and medium enterprises (SMMEs) appointed was 11, of which two were women-owned. Furthermore, the project successfully facilitated the training of 14 engineers, several of whom subsequently achieved professional registration, representing a significant milestone in capacity building,” stated the department.
