PRETORIA – President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Dr. Crispian Olver as the new Deputy Chairperson of the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC), with the appointment taking effect on 1 November 2024. Dr. Olver has succeeded Valli Moosa, who occupied the position since the establishment of the PCC in December 2020 until his retirement earlier this year.
Prior to this appointment, Dr. Olver served as the Executive Director of the PCC, providing support to Moosa during his tenure. The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC), chaired by President Cyril Ramaphosa, was established in response to the recommendations made during the 2018 Presidential Jobs Summit. At this summit, social partners reached a consensus on the necessity of creating a multi-stakeholder body tasked with coordinating and overseeing South Africa’s transition to a low-carbon, inclusive, and climate-resilient economy.
The commission was established as a Schedule 3A public entity subsequent to the signing of the Climate Change Act by President Ramaphosa in July 2024.
Dr. Olver possesses a wealth of experience and a robust skill set that he brings to his new position. He served as the Director-General of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism in South Africa’s inaugural democratic government from 1999 to 2005. In this capacity, he played a pivotal role in shaping climate policy, developing environmental legislation, and overseeing South Africa’s organization of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development.
President extends his congratulations to Dr. Olver on his new appointment and has encouraged him, along with the entire commission, to persist in fostering social dialogue and engagement. This effort is essential to ensure that South Africa’s response to climate change and its transition towards sustainability are inclusive and prioritize socio-economic interests, thereby advancing the nation’s global objectives in addressing the climate crisis, the Presidency in an official announcement.
President Ramaphosa expressed gratitude to the outgoing Deputy Chairperson, Valli Moosa, for his unwavering commitment and dedication to the commission, as well as for his effective leadership since its inception in 2020.
