JOHANNESBURG – A group of hackers have shut down all SABC websites.

The public broadcaster’s main site as well as the 5-FM and SA-FM sites were attacked at midday on Sunday.

An organisation called Anonymous Africa has claimed responsibility.

It says this is the biggest cyber-attack of its kind ever in South Africa and says it’s in response to alleged censorship by the SABC.

The broadcaster recently banned the screening of images showing the destruction of property during protests.

The hacker group did warn on Twitter that an attack on the group was going to happen about midday on Sunday.

@zim4thewin Well done guys! Show Hlaudi who is boss. Not him but the public of SA. 🙂

We will stop the attacks at SABC (for now) at 4pm. We are not done yet, lots of action coming. Things are going to get wild!
